Mercedes-Benz Have Recalled 60,000 GLS SUVs – Here’s Why.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is undoubtedly the flagship SUV for the vehicle manufacturer, but an issue with the third-row seats has led to quite a vast recall campaign in Northern America. Affecting over 59,500 cars manufactured between 2018 and 2022, this is undoubtedly a substantial recall of their best-selling SUV.

The issue that has led to the recall affects the seats in the third row of the vehicle, in which a defect could cause the seats to not lock in place in the case of an accident. Without this lock, the seats could move upon impact and lead to major injury or even fatality. The defect, however, appears to be an issue from the supplier, Brose North America, who informed Mercedes of the problem and triggered a recall. The issue appeared to be related to incorrect installation or positioning of the springs in the locking mechanism, which may lead to the seatback lock failing in emergencies.

Currently, the models Mercedes are reporting as affected include:

  • 51,998 Mercedes Benz GLS SVs Model Year 2020-2022
  • GLS450 models manufactured between 18th September 2018 – 4th July 2022
  • 5,212 Mercedes-Benz GLS580s Model Year 2020-2022
  • 2,364 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS63 Model Year 2021, manufactured between September 18th 2018 and July 12th 2022

All vehicles in the above categories are thought to be affected in North America currently, meaning that all owners of these models from or in North American markets should respond to the recall as soon as possible.

Currently, Mercedes are unaware of any incidents where this fault may have caused any injury and has received no complaints. The recall also currently only affects the North American market, though it’s unclear whether this recall is likely to spread to other markets, including the UK, in the near future.
